Kotka Private Hospital Plastic Surgery Center is considered a very patient-friendly aesthetic surgery center. In addition, the hospital uses the latest operating room technology, and the interior resembles a hotel more than a medical facility.
Dr Jüri Kullamaa and Dr Mart Eller discuss aesthetic medicine and trends in cosmetic surgery.
What are the latest trends in plastic surgery?
Jüri Kullamaa: This is a field that is constantly changing and evolving, but something new is also being rediscovered in the old. The trend is towards less invasive methods – as little trauma as possible, to return to work sooner. Time is money for everyone!
For example, in breast surgery, at a certain time, implant placement was preferred under the pectoral muscle, but now the first preference is under the glandular tissue, to create less trauma. More and more, there is a return to smooth-surfaced implants that were previously used. Implants themselves have become much more elastic, physically less palpable, so that the edge is not visible through the breast tissue. This provides the advantage of placing the breast implant more closely under the gland.
What do you recommend to young women who desire a more beautiful bust? Should they wait until children are born and breastfed?
Jüri Kullamaa: The trend has changed, because in the past, births occurred at 20, but nowadays predominantly at 30. If there is asymmetry already at a young age, today’s woman wants to enjoy a better appearance immediately, not wait 10 years. If family planning is in the future, it is always necessary to proceed from the specific patient and find the best solution, keeping in mind that the breast with implants would still look good after pregnancy and breastfeeding. What is the best age for eyelid plastic surgery?
Mart Eller: There is no specific age, there is an indication. The youngest patient with pronounced lower eyelid swelling has been 18 years old. The problem is primarily cosmetic. At what age the indication arises is individual. A consultation provides clarity.
How inclined are Estonian men to use the possibilities of aesthetic medicine?
Mart Eller: A rising trend is noticeable. Initially, they do come to the consultation accompanied by a woman. But experience has shown that once a man has found his way, they come back on their own! They often start with non-surgical procedures like fillers and botulinum injections. Besides eyelid plastic surgery, body trunk liposuction is popular among men. Gynecomastia, or correction of female-like breasts, has become increasingly popular to achieve a more masculine chest.
What are the new possibilities of cosmetic injections for those who want to correct their appearance without going under the knife?
Mart Eller: Allergan offers an innovative deoxycholic acid preparation that allows for the removal of submental fat by breaking down fat cells. The advantage of this method is that during the procedure, the skin in the area is also tightened – collagen synthesis increases through fibroblast activation. The procedure is not the cheapest, but definitely worth its price. This is a so-called “lunch break” procedure. Recovery time needs to be accounted for, on average 7–10 days – this is how long swelling and redness persist, which can be concealed with a scarf, allowing you to continue normal daily life.
