Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Plastic surgery is a step towards greater self-confidence and a better sense of well-being – whether it’s related to refreshing one’s appearance, correcting body shape, or restoring health. We understand that many questions may arise before making a decision. For this purpose, we have compiled frequently asked questions to provide a clear and honest overview of the procedures’ course, safety, recovery, and pricing.

1. What procedures are performed at Kotka Private Hospital’s Plastic Surgery Clinic?
In our clinic, we offer a wide range of aesthetic and reconstructive surgery services: breast augmentation, reduction, and lift, face and neck lifts, eyelid surgery, liposuction, abdominoplasty, intimate surgery, and various aesthetic procedures.

2. How does the initial consultation work?
During the consultation, you will discuss your wishes and expectations with the doctor, and the doctor will assess your health condition and suitability for the procedure. The course of the operation, risks, recovery, and price will also be explained.

3. How long is the waiting list for surgery?
The waiting time depends on the procedure and the doctor’s schedule, usually 2–6 weeks after the consultation.

4. Are operations performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia?
This depends on the procedure. Larger operations are performed under general anesthesia, while smaller procedures often use local anesthesia.

5. How long does recovery take?
The recovery period depends on the operation. After smaller procedures, you can return to work within a few days; for larger operations, recovery takes 2–6 weeks.

6. Do I need to stay in the hospital after the operation?
Most procedures are day surgery – you can go home on the same day. For larger operations, overnight observation in the hospital is necessary.

7. What risks are associated with plastic surgery?
As with any surgical procedure, bleeding, infection, scarring, or anesthesia risks may occur. During the consultation, the doctor will explain all risks and preventive measures.

8. Are the results permanent?
The results of operations are long-lasting, but the natural aging process, lifestyle, and changes in body weight can affect the appearance over time.

9. How much does a plastic surgery operation cost?
The price depends on the nature and extent of the procedure. A precise price quote will be provided after the consultation.

10. Is it possible to pay in installments?
Yes, in cooperation with our financial partners, we offer an installment payment option.

11. Does Kotka Private Hospital also perform rehabilitation or follow-up checks?
Yes, all operations include follow-up checks with a doctor or nurse. If necessary, we recommend post-operative care or additional examinations.

12. How to prepare for surgery?
Before surgery, blood tests and, if necessary, an ECG are required. Smoking and alcohol consumption should be avoided for at least 2 weeks before and after the procedure. The doctor will give precise instructions individually.

13. Does insurance cover plastic surgery procedures?
Aesthetic surgery is not reimbursed by the Health Insurance Fund. Reconstructive surgery (e.g., after breast cancer) may be reimbursable in certain cases, but Kotka Private Hospital Plastic Surgery Center does not have a contract with the Estonian Health Insurance Fund.

14. When can I go to the gym after surgery?
Light activity (e.g., walking) can be started within a couple of days, unless the doctor has given contrary instructions. With more intense training and lifting weights, one should wait at least 4–6 weeks, depending on the procedure. Your treating physician will make the final decision individually.

15. What do I need to bring to the hospital?
At Kotka Private Hospital, we provide you with everything necessary – hospital clothes, slippers, and towels. You should only bring an identification document, daily medications, and personal hygiene items if needed. We do not recommend bringing valuables or jewelry.
We also recommend bringing warm socks, as you may feel cold after the procedure. And a small snack if you get hungry before a meal. Coffee and tea are provided by us.

16. When is the right time to consult a cosmetic surgeon?
It is advisable to consult a cosmetic surgeon if you wish to change or correct something in your appearance and it affects your well-being or quality of life. It is also the right time if you have noticed health-related changes (e.g., impaired vision due to upper eyelids) or wish to restore your body shape after pregnancy, weight loss, or illness. During the consultation, the surgeon will help find a suitable and safe solution that considers both your wishes and your health condition.

17. From what age can cosmetic surgery be performed?
Most aesthetic operations are performed on adults from the age of 18, when the body and face are fully developed and the person can make an informed decision. In some cases (for example, congenital anomalies or a nasal deformity that hinders breathing), surgical intervention may be justified earlier. For individuals under 18, the decision is always made in cooperation with parents and the doctor.

18. How much larger do Estonian women usually have their breasts augmented?
For breast augmentation, the goal is a natural and body-appropriate result. Estonian women usually prefer breasts that are 1–2 cup sizes larger. The exact size and shape of the implant are always chosen individually, taking into account the patient’s physique, skin elasticity, and personal wishes. During the consultation, the surgeon will help you choose the most suitable size for you.

19. Do men also undergo cosmetic surgeries?
Yes, an increasing number of men are turning to cosmetic surgeons. Among men, the most popular procedures are eyelid plastic surgery, liposuction, abdominoplasty, nose surgeries, and gynecomastia, which is the reduction of excess breast tissue. Men are also interested in aesthetic procedures that help refresh their appearance and boost self-confidence.

20. How to choose a cosmetic surgeon?
When choosing a cosmetic surgeon, it is worth paying attention to their education, experience, and specialization. It is important that the surgeon is a recognized plastic surgeon with long-term experience in both aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. Review photos of previous work, read patient feedback, and evaluate whether the doctor’s communication style and consultation inspire trust. A good surgeon takes your wishes into account, but also explains possible limitations and risks.

21. Does Kotka Private Hospital also perform aesthetic injections?
Yes, our clinic also performs non-surgical aesthetic procedures, including botulinum toxin injections and filler injections. These help smooth wrinkles, restore facial volume, and refresh appearance in a natural way. During the consultation, the doctor will discuss with you which solution best suits your expectations and needs.

Book a consultation

A consultation is the beginning of every outcome – a place where we make the first important decisions together.

During this process, you will receive a doctor’s assessment, understand your possibilities and limitations, and gain a clear overview of what kind of outcome is realistic. If necessary, this also means making a decision not to intervene, as every decision must be justified.
