Scar treatment and fractional laser resurfacing

Scar treatment and fractional laser resurfacing help make scars less noticeable and improve skin texture.

Laser treatment can soften changes left by surgery, injury or acne. Fractional resurfacing treats the skin in small zones, supporting renewal and collagen formation.

The aim is a more even skin surface and softer scar tissue. A scar cannot be removed completely, but its appearance can often be improved.

About the procedure

The procedure may suit you if you have

  • a scar left by surgery or injury
  • acne scars on the cheeks or elsewhere on the face
  • an uneven skin surface caused by scars
  • a wish to improve the texture of the skin around the mouth or of the whole face

The choice of treatment depends on the type, age and location of the scar and on the condition of your skin.

Before the procedure

  • The doctor assesses the scar and the surrounding skin and explains what change the treatment can achieve.
  • For a recent surgical or traumatic scar, the doctor sets a suitable time to start, based on how the wound has healed.
  • Before treating acne scars, active acne and inflammation are brought under control, to reduce new scarring.
  • Tell the doctor about medicines you use, previous skin procedures and any cold sores in the area to be treated.
  • Protect the skin from the sun and follow the preparation advice given at the consultation.

Duration

  • The procedure takes about 30–60 minutes, depending on the size of the area and the extent of treatment.
  • Anaesthetic is used beforehand when needed.
  • Scar treatment is often given as a course. The doctor sets the number of procedures and the interval between them according to the skin and how it heals.

Recovery

  • After laser treatment the skin may be red, swollen and sensitive. Resurfacing can also cause crusts and flaking.
  • How long recovery takes depends on the intensity of the procedure, the area treated and your skin.
  • The doctor gives instructions for cleansing, caring for and protecting the skin from the sun.
  • Let the skin heal undisturbed and do not pick off crusts or flaking skin.

The result of scar treatment develops gradually. Skin renewal and scar maturation continue for months, and judging the final result can take longer.

Where to start?

If a scar or uneven skin texture bothers you, start with a consultation. You can talk about how the scar formed, any previous treatment and the change you hope for.

The doctor assesses whether laser treatment is suitable, when it could start and how long a course may be needed. Together we go through recovery, possible side effects and a realistic result.

Book a consultation

A consultation is the beginning of every outcome – a place where we make the first important decisions together.

During this process, you will receive a doctor’s assessment, understand your possibilities and limitations, and gain a clear overview of what kind of outcome is realistic. If necessary, this also means making a decision not to intervene, as every decision must be justified.
