6 myths about plastic surgery

Although the majority of people in Estonia seeking help from plastic surgery are women, this trend is changing in other parts of the world, and more and more men are also reaching out to adjust their appearance.

A cosmetic surgical procedure requires a person to have a fair amount of courage to embark on a journey that will change their life to a greater or lesser extent.

One way to gather courage is to search for information on the internet, which unfortunately also creates misconceptions among people – ranging from the idea that breast implants should be removed during pregnancy to the myth that fat removed by liposuction quickly returns.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Jüri Kullamaa of Kotka Private Hospital Plastic Surgery Center has heard several erroneous opinions during his thirty years of practice.

“One of the most common myths is that breast implants increase the risk of breast cancer. However, this has not been proven by studies so far, and the history of breast augmentation procedures dates back to 1895,” said Dr. Kullamaa, adding that before every operation, mammography or ultrasound is performed to rule out an existing tumor, and the patient must continue regular check-ups after the operation.

As another myth, Dr. Kullamaa points out that it is believed that if a photo of the desired result is shown to the surgeon, it is easily achievable. “Every woman is different, and breast surgery takes into account the shape, size, and symmetry of each individual’s breast, all of which play an important role in achieving the desired result,” explained Dr. Kullamaa.

“Also, not all breast implants have to be very large, as is also mistakenly believed. Breast implants come in very different sizes, but beauty is, of course, in the eye of the beholder,” added the doctor, acknowledging that it is important to follow each person’s body proportions and make adjustments within the limits of naturalness.

In addition to myths related to breast augmentation surgery, several misconceptions also circulate about, for example, filler injections. “It is believed that using them causes a person to lose the ability to express their emotions, but in reality, this only happens if too much filler substance reaches the facial muscles, and the person performing the procedure is responsible for this,” said Dr. Pille Kirjanen, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Kotka Private Hospital Plastic Surgery Center.

Dr. Kirjanen has also repeatedly encountered the opinion that cosmetic surgery is only for women.

“There are many procedures that are suitable for both men and women – what is important is what is desired to be changed with the result. If, for example, it involves ears that stick out from the head or skin problems related to excessive sweating, then it doesn’t matter whether it’s a woman or a man,” said Dr. Kirjanen.

“Currently, however, the majority of patients seeking help from plastic surgery procedures are women, but this trend is already changing in other parts of the world,” commented Dr. Kirjanen on the future trends of cosmetic surgery. Both surgeons emphasize that the myth that a surgical procedure alone is enough to remain youthful and beautiful also needs to be debunked.

“We cannot prevent aging, but we can take care of ourselves so that the results last longer,” said Dr. Pille Kirjanen. “Healthy eating and exercise are still the foundation of every person’s beauty,” added Dr. Jüri Kullamaa.

Book a consultation

A consultation is the beginning of every outcome – a place where we make the first important decisions together.

During this process, you will receive a doctor’s assessment, understand your possibilities and limitations, and gain a clear overview of what kind of outcome is realistic. If necessary, this also means making a decision not to intervene, as every decision must be justified.
