The appearance of ears depends on inheritable factors. If one does not like the position or shape of one’s ears, it can be improved by an operation. Ears can be reshaped also before a child becomes an adult. Reshaping of protruding ears is a surgical procedure, which aim is to set prominent ears into their natural position. Before surgery medical examination will be carried out. Questions will be asked about illnesses suffered and chronic diseases and allergies occurred. In the course of a consultation the client’s expectations and wishes as for the final result will be specified. The operation is usually performed under local anesthesia. It takes one to two hours. The incision is made in the back of the ear so that the scar would be as inconspicuous as possible. Following the surgery the patient’s head will be wrapped in compression bandage in order to reduce swelling and bleeding. Children seldom experience postoperative pain; adults experience pain much more often. The pain occurs in the area of the ears, it is usually short-term and can be relieved easily by common painkillers. The procedure does not require hospitalization. After the surgery a supporting bandage must be worn on the ears for one to two weeks. When the stitches have been removed, it is recommended to wear a headband for up to one month after the surgery. Sometimes it is necessary to perform one more correction surgery in order to obtain the desired result. The stitches in the ear will be removed in seven to ten days after the surgery.
